Couples Counselling β€” Therapist Vaughan

Every relationship hits hard patches β€” the difference is whether you get through them together or drift further apart. Couples counselling gives you a calm, neutral space to do the former. The couples counselling Vaughan partners come to us for is not about assigning blame or picking a side; it's about helping the two of you understand the patterns you keep falling into, communicate in a way that actually gets heard, and rebuild the connection that brought you together. Couples reach out for all kinds of reasons: communication that's turned into the same argument on repeat, a breakdown in trust, growing apart, navigating a major life change together, parenting friction, intimacy that's faded, or simply wanting a tune-up before small cracks become big ones. Sessions are typically 60 minutes with both partners present, and the therapist's job is to stay balanced β€” making sure both of you feel heard and neither of you feels ganged up on. You'll learn to slow down the conversations that usually blow up, to say what you actually mean, and to hear what your partner is really saying underneath the frustration. Whether you're in crisis or just want to be closer, coming in together is one of the most caring things partners can do for each other.

What Couples Counselling Includes

Couples sessions are structured to keep things safe, balanced, and productive β€” not a refereed argument. Each engagement includes:

  • 60-minute sessions with both partners, in person in Vaughan or securely online
  • A balanced, neutral space where both of you are genuinely heard
  • An early session to map the recurring patterns and cycles you get stuck in
  • Communication skills that de-escalate the conversations that usually blow up
  • Tools for rebuilding trust after a breach, a betrayal, or years of drift
  • Support through life transitions β€” parenting, career, family, and change
  • Space to talk about intimacy and connection openly and without shame
  • Practical between-session exercises you do as a team, not homework grades
  • Guidance that respects both partners' perspectives and cultural backgrounds
  • A receipt for each session for reimbursement through most extended health plans

Couples who come in tend to leave with the same thing: fewer of the same old fights, and more of the understanding that made them a couple in the first place. Even partners who arrive unsure they'll stay together usually leave clearer, calmer, and better able to talk to each other.

Our Approach to Working with Couples

The most important thing to know is that couples counselling here is not about deciding who's right. Almost every stuck relationship is caught in a pattern β€” a predictable cycle where one partner's move triggers the other's, round and round, until the real issue disappears behind the fight about the fight. Our first job is to help you both see that cycle clearly, because once you can name it, you can step out of it together, as teammates against the pattern rather than opponents against each other. We draw on well-established relationship methods, including emotionally focused and Gottman-informed approaches, to help you slow escalating conversations down, express the softer needs and fears underneath the anger, and truly hear each other. The therapist stays scrupulously balanced β€” both partners' experiences are valid, and neither leaves a session feeling ganged up on. Where trust has been broken, we work carefully and without shortcuts, because rebuilt trust has to be earned in steps. And when a couple ultimately decides to part, we can help them do it with far less damage, especially where children are involved.

Sessions, Format & Fees

Couples sessions run 60 minutes with both partners present, offered in person at our Vaughan office or securely online by video for partners across Ontario, including couples who are in different locations and want to join the same session from separate screens. Most couples begin weekly or biweekly, since momentum matters when you're changing long-standing patterns, and space sessions out as things stabilize. Occasionally the therapist may suggest a solo session with each partner early on to understand each perspective fully, always with clear ground rules about confidentiality between sessions. Fees follow standard Ontario couples-counselling rates, and a receipt is provided after each session for reimbursement under most extended health plans when your therapist is a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker. Reaching out together is the first step β€” send a message through the contact form and we'll help you book a time that works for both of you.

Common Questions

Couples Counselling FAQ

Answers to the questions Vaughan clients ask most about couples counselling.

That's extremely common β€” often one partner reaches out first. It can help to frame it not as 'fixing' anyone but as investing in the relationship, and to emphasize that the therapist stays neutral and won't take sides. Many reluctant partners feel very differently after one session, once they see it's a fair, respectful space. If needed, you're also welcome to start with individual sessions.
